You are here: Home > Things to see > The mount Nieddu
It could be considered a wild, rough and fascinating mountain that deserves a careful visit because of its
beauties and the richness of flora and fauna.
Mount Nieddu is called Montinieddu and it means "black mountain"
because of its dark and thick wood that covered the same since just the past.
The territory of San Teodoro is characterized of granitic massifs: at North-west there are Altòra hills, Sarra di
Còlti, Mount Almuttu with its woody slopes, Sitagliacciu; at South-west Mastru Ghjòlghju hills and Arèsula;
at South there are those of La Rèna Ultìa.
The
Mount Nieddu is a very big granitic massif called Montinieddu that with Punta Magghjiori is 970 M. above sea level.
Mount Nieddu is an area protected by regional law n° 31 of 1989 located between territories of San Teodoro and
Padru.
Mount Nieddu was just known in the past for its dark forest of old holm-oaks, junipers and a lot of different yews
(taxus baccata) that created big woods a long time.
Now the area is covered with typical Mediterranean scrub.
In this kind of forest one find wild boars, martens and wild cats; in the highest rocks live rare raptors like
peregrine and golden eagles. There are even a lot of ravens and partridges.
From Mount Nieddu a lot of small watercourses created different natural pools and amazing waterfalls.
It is possible to join Mount Nieddu with a bicycle.
